Kind words in memory of Don

I will always cherish the memories of the BlackBoard Nails playing at the Bank's United Way 2004 celebration. Let Don's smile keep your music alive. I'm sure he would want the group to go on.

Take the long way home, Don!

Joan Goyette

Hi there,

First of all I would like to express my deepest sympathy to all of you with the passing of Don. Don was a co-worker of my husband (Luc Bélisle) and I at the Bank of Canada - Corporate Services Department, and we are truly saddened that he won't be around anymore to joke with, or to talk about his passions in life, Jennifer, Sue and his especially his love for music & all of you. He was a very special person, and we'll truly miss him.

Through Don we were lucky to have been introduced to your band when you played at the Bank of Canada in October 2004, then when Luc & I went to hear you play at Sonny's. We had a great time hearing your music and getting to meet each of you. During a break that evening, Don sat with Sue, Luc and I, and he told us about his history as a member of the Blackboard Nails. He told us that at one point he purchased a second set of drums to practice even more so that he could achieve a level of professionalism that you would all be proud of. I thought that you would all like to know how proud Don was to be part of the Blackboard Nails and how he truly loved you all.

Attached you will find a picture that I took of Jennifer and Don at the Corporate Services children's Christmas party last December 23rd. He was really happy when I asked if he would like it if I took a picture of both of them. They were both giggling and full of love at the time of the photo, and this is how I'll always remember him. When I went to the funeral home last week, I brought a framed copy of the picture to Jennifer as a souvenir, Sue was really happy to see it. Upon her request I e-mailed her a copy of this picture too.

I've just visited your website and was very happy to see how well you have paid homage to Don on your website. The eulogy is very touching.

Take care, :-)

Linda Gravelle-Bélisle

Sue,

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful person Don is. We worked together for years and spent many lunch hours roller bladding in the gym. Don is such a kind and caring person and I can't begin to imagine how difficult this time is for you and your family. I am in total shock and horribly sad that he past away so suddenly.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
Cathy Coghlan (Ottawa, ON )

Sue,

Words cannot express how saddened we are by the passing of Don. He was such a kind, generous person, always positive, ready to help and he certainly was a huge source of information. He will be missed by a lot of people and I for one will never be able to have Dim Sum again.
Johanne Landry (Ottawa, ON )

Mr.Dunphy & Family,

My sincere condolences. I'm so sorry to hear of the untimely passing of my old friend. Please know that my thoughts are with you in this difficult time.Although I only saw Malcolm periodically over recent years, it seemed he never lost any of his colourful personality, good humour and from what I understand his passion as a musician (as I remember, a talented one). When I last saw Malcolm he spoke with great admiration of his newly formed family and especially the apple of his eye, his daughter Jennifer. Thinking back now, I have a lot of good memories of Malcolm especially our days as kids growing up in Granby , they still make me smile and give me a chuckle to this day. What more could any friend have been....Until our paths cross again, keep on playing your music Daph!
Bill Turnbull

Such a wonderful, kind human being. I will miss his quiet, warm presence at work. My prayers are with Don and your family.

Don will be missed by all of us who worked with him, especially at the Bank. I learned from him and was inspired by his kindness and respect for others.
Collins Omole (Ottawa, ON )
I am shocked to hear the news of Don's (Daff's) passing. I live in the Eastern Township's of Quebec, near the town of Granby, where Daff grew up. Although slightly younger than Daff, I remember his wit, sense of humour, musical abilities and, when allowed, The Club. Also those bus rides home from school in the back of the bus. Condolances to all the members of his family.
Brian Kilpatrick (Shefford, QC )
I worked with Don on the Bank's United Way campaign for a number of years. His friendliness, humour and willingness to help others will be remembered. My sincere condolences to the family.
Paula Batson (Ottawa, ON )
If a single tear fell from your eyes into the ocean and then washed up on some far and distant shore I would still recognize that teardrop For in the end that tear would still be yours... Farewell.....

It was a pleasure knowing him and working with him. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Jenny and all his family in these difficult times.

After not seeing Don for over 20 years, I had the gift of a day with him last spring when he called me while visiting with his family in Calgary. We had a wonderful time and it was as though there were no years in between. He was always so easy to talk to and interested in everyone. He proudly showed me pictures of Sue and Jenny and told me about the Band and his work at the Bank. I will always cherish that day ... my heart aches for you all.
Kari Giddings (Calgary, AB )
I have fond memories of Don as a teenager in Granby. I'll always remember him as a kind hearted, wonderful and very cool guy. He was someone whose compassion and understanding touched me in a most unforgettable way. My deepest sympathies to family and friends.
Patti Outram (Vancouver, BC )
Sue and Jenny, Words cannot express the sadness and shock that I experienced when I heard that Don had passed away. I will always remember his kindness, his sense of humour, and his joy in living. He shared a little of his life's journey with me and I was proud of him and his choices. More that those, though, I will remember his love for both of you. Jenny, you were the centre of his life when I first met your dad. Over several lunches, he talked of no one but you. Later, Sue, I had lunch with him one day and he was grinning from ear to ear. He said, "I'm going to get married." WOW!

I will miss Don as a friend and as a respected colleague.

You are both in my thoughts and prayers.
Mary Holding (Ottawa, ON )

Having Don on our committee was a pleasure - his good humour and active involvement were always appreciated. Sincere condolences to Don's family.

My most sincere condolence to Don's family. Having the pleasure to work with Don in the past few years, I have fond memories of him. He was such a gentle, easy-going person with lots of sense of humour. I am fully impressed by his positive attitude and his determination to reach his own goals. He will be deeply missed.
Michelle Lam (Kanata, ON )
My deepest sympathies to Sue and Jennifer and to all of Don's family and friends. Don will always be in our hearts and memories here at the Bank of Canada.
Jean Lam (Nepean, ON )
Denis Clairand (Ottawa, ON )
there is truly a large, empty hole in this world now...a lovely person, and loving man...how blessed I am for having met Don and his small family, and for the shear pleasure of gigging with him...he has gone to play for the angels...
Ginette Hamilton (Bourget, ON )
Ayant eu la chance de côtoyer Don en tant que collègue de travail, sa perte si soudaine nous attriste énormément. Je tiens à exprimer mes plus sincères sympathies à votre égard, Sue et Jenny, ainsi qu'à toute votre famille.
Michel Charron (Gatineau, QC )
Sue, Jennifer, I think of you at this very difficult time. Don's sudden passing is a reminder to all of us to live in the moment. It was a pleasure to work with him, and I will miss his joyfulness.
Louise Boutin (Ottawa, ON )

Farewell, Mr Tambourine Man!
Josée Gauthier (Ottawa, ON )

I was always happy to see Don when our paths crossed at the Bank of Canada. He gave a smile and a sincere Hello each time we met. He came to watch one of my family member's band when they played a few months ago in Ottawa. He was full of smiles and positive energy all evening.

My sincere condolences to his wife, daughter, family and friends.

Don will be missed.
Rose Carty (Ottawa, ON )

I'll truly miss you .
Tim Young (Burlington, ON )
My sincere condolences to Donald's family. Daph, you were a huge part of my teenage years, you will be sorely missed. I can still see you coming up to "the club" with your tea after supper! Your compassion will be missed, farewell friend.
Norm Kilpatrick (Greensboro, GA )
Mr Donald Dunphy & Jimmy:

Allow me to extend to you both my most sincere condolences and those of my mother Vera. Please convey my most heart felt sympathies to Malcolm's wife and daughter.

I can still recall those times in Granby when we visited your home down the street and the laughter we all shared and the stories.
Brian Griffiths (Fredericton, NB )

To Sue, Jennifer and Don's extended family

I was truly saddened when I heard about Don's passing, God bless him. Whenever I bumped into Don he always had time for a smile and a chat. This is what I will remember and miss the most. He was a great person to know. My sincere condolences to all of you.
Georges Richard (Rockland, ON )

Suzanne and Jennifer, I'm deeply affected by Don's passing. I've always had the feeling you are part of my family, and you know why... I lived before you .. in that little house shadowed by the big green pines and left the cheerful birds and animals of the forest for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you now.

This little poem is for you, Jennifer, if anything can comfort you in that moment.

Father, I Wish

I wish,
You are in peace
I wish,
You are with me
I wish,
You'd never gone
I wish,
You are now free
As much as
...You've loved me.
Adriana Popescu (Ottawa, ON )

Words cannot express the shocks I have upon hearing the news of Don's sudden departure. His smiles, his sense of humor, his easy going attitude and also his musical talent, will truly be remembered. Not just in the Bank of Canada, but beyond. I had the great fortune to work and interact with him from time to time when we were part of the same team in the Bank. I will never forget how his knowledge on different subjects helped me personally on numerous situations. He will be missed dearly.
Bernard Chiu (kanata, ON )
I knew Malcolm all my life, but for me the best times were the last 7 or 8 years in Blackboard Nails where the band spent as much time in conversation as playing music. Over the years we traded countless stories and explored every topic we could think of. My favourite times were shooting the breeze about old times in Granby and getting the dirt on who was doing what now. I genuinely envied his positive and unflappable nature and have tried to model myself after him. For me personally he is irreplaceable and my heart goes out to all who had the good fortune to have known him.
Tim Ladd (Ottawa, ON )
Sincerest sympathy to Sue, Jenny, and family members on behalf of the Corporate Services Department of the Bank of Canada. I had an opportunity to chat with Don and meet Jenny at our Christmas reception Dec. 23rd and we talked about holiday plans and how he was looking forward to the time with family. I know he contributed a lot to the Bank and to his co-workers in his many years working in IT and he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.
Janice Gabie (Nepean , ON )
As has already been said, Don touched people in a special way. He was very open and his love for his family and life was so evident it was contagious. We will miss Don very much.
Sheryl Kennedy (Ottawa, ON )
To the Dunphy Family.

I was greatly saddened to learn about Don's passing. I knew him while I worked at the Bank of Canada, in particular, he was part of my roller blade family in the Fitness center. He was a great skater and always had a smile on his face.

My deepest symphony
Ian Englehart (Ottawa, ON )

My sincere condolences to all of Don's family. I had a few opportunities to work with Don at the Bank of Canada - he was always positive, helpful and most of all a genuinely kind colleague. He will be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and daughter in this difficult time.
Dorothy Overton (Ottawa, ON )
My deepest condolences. Don was such a happy, easy going person. Always had a smile to share. He will be sorely missed by many whose lives he touched.
Dorothy Sargent (Ottawa, ON )
Finding the right words to express my sadness is very difficult.

I will always remember Don's sense of humour, his kindness and his devotion to his family. This is a big loss to the Bank - he was a great co-worker and friend. He will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to Sue, Jennie and family.
Marika Enders (Aylmer, QC )

Sue, Jennifer My deepest condolences to all of Don's family and to his many friends. Don was a man who always had a kind word, and an easy smile. His passions in life were Jennifer, Sue and his music. My husband and I were very fortunate to know Don at work, and to hear him play the drums with his Band "The Blackboard Nails".

Jennifer & Sue, you are in our thoughts & prayers. May you always treasure the picture of Jennifer & Don at the December 23rd - Children's Christmas party.

You will truly be missed my friend, but never forgotten.

Salut mon ami,
Linda Gravelle-Bélisle (Gatineau, QC )

I was shocked to learn of Don's fate. I feel blessed to have learned from him and I feel fortunate to have shared many meetings together. He was always there to give a smile, hug, and a listening ear. My deepest condolences to his family, Sue, and Jenny. Don, you will remind me, to pray, to live for today, and to be grateful- for this I thank you.
Pamela Dilawri (Ottawa, ON )

Welcome all.

To Sue, Jenny, Mr. Dunphy, Jimmy, family and friends, thank you for coming.

Donald Malcolm Dunphy - April 2, 1958 - December 29, 2005

47 years of life - it seems like a long time, but it wasn't. It's hard to sum up 40+ years in 5 minutes.

Donald, or "Daph" to his friends, will always evoke all kinds of fond memories.

Donald loved music and was extremely talented. He could play to any crowd and keep them captivated with a song, piano, guitar, drums, banjo... the list goes on.

He loved and doted over his daughter Jenny (the gem of his eye) with the same passion as his music.

He made me proud the day he asked me to be his best man at his wedding.

Sue, to quote Donald, "the new love in my life."

Donald was a little bit of a gypsy. He couldn't make up his mind as to which province he wanted to be in. Quebec, Ontario, Quebec, Ontario, Quebec, Ontario, till he finally lived in Gatineau, Quebec and worked in Ottawa, Ontario.

One of Don's earlier jobs was working for peanuts at the Granby Zoo. He so loved being with animals! One of the fringe benefits was that he could get friends in for free!

July 1st, in Ottawa will never be the same watching fireworks from the ground as it was when we viewed it from HIGH atop the Bank of Canada.

Donald was technically proficient, but get him to walk down the street and he would fall flat on his face.

He lived like a rock star and died like one. Unfortunately, some choices are the wrong ones.

Some friends are forever and he will always be our friend.

Mr. Dunphy - no father should ever have to bury his son. My heart goes out to you. Right now Margaret is probably scolding him as we all are.

Donald, we will miss you. God bless.

(Thank you Larry for making this available to us)
